Caelum is inspired by the idea of structures found in icebergs, as well as the constellations found in the sky. A combination of the two ideas brings forth a unique typeface with a three-dimensional look. Its most dominant feature are the angular lines and uniform italicized strokes. It is sans-serif in the conventional sense, but has invented serifs made from arrow-like forms. The letterforms have irregular counters and a high crossbar, with a fixed line width. Based on the typeface, Pistilli Roman, Haircut emphasizes the beautiful juxtaposition of thick vs. thin stems; the letterforms are created by hand by arranging hairs of a wig to mimic the thin and delicate stems of Pistilli Roman. Based on the sleepy fictional town in the Andy Griffith show, <em>Mayberry</em> embodies the idea of simple America and the importance of its rural values. The letterforms are created from traditional frilled toothpicks that are often used to hold sandwiches together and classic white Wonder Bread. These two items and a checkered picnic cloth are symbols of small town America. One of its most obvious and notable features is the diagonal slopes forming the crossbars. I was looking for a way to create unique letterforms and I was really inspired by how easy it was to create elegant shapes using a calligraphy pen. What drew me to the idea of using an octopus as my inspiration was how innately flexible these animals are. I wanted to explore how that flexibility could contribute to the letters I would create. For <em>Octopoda’s</em> punctuation I modeled the characters after an octopus’ ink ejections, feeling that they should be an extension of the letters’ personality. It is fun, dynamic and activated. My inspiration of this font came from an illustration of a rain cloud. Every letter is made up of rain cloud and rain drops with different weight in order to present a sense of movement.
